Motions – Naturally You

Monday, January 30th, 2012

I can’t think of the words to express how blessed I feel. I think lucky or excited beyond measure are a few phrases that reveal my emotions perfectly.

Let me explain. I was recently invited to a luncheon hosted by MOTIONS hair care products. MOTIONS is mainly known for their relaxers, but now the company has created a new line of products for natural hair called Naturally You. I attended the affair that launched the entire line. The event took place in my hometown, New York City, at the magnificent Mondrian Hotel in Soho. I haven’t visited New York since I relocated to New Mexico in June. I was clearly happy to return to my old neighborhood, and most of all, to be a part of a new product line that celebrates natural hair care.

Back in my perm days, I often used MOTIONS relaxer, and because of my familiarity with the company, I was extremely excited about having the opportunity to investigate their latest brand for kinky hair. Naturally You consists of five major items that include a Moisturizing Cleanser, Smoothing Conditioner, Deep Conditioning Masque, Hydrating Pudding and Radiating Gloss. Each product was produced for curly hair and infused with Shea Butter, Coconut and Avocado oils. As I see it, one of the best things about Naturally You is the price. Items range from $6.00 to $7.00 which clearly makes them affordable.

Whether you’re wearing your natural hair in tightly-coiled curls, loose ringlets, flowing waves or super straight, new MOTIONS Naturally You products are specially-formulated to moisturize your hair with essential natural oils. Embrace the incredible beauty of your natural hair with Motions Naturally You. For more information visit us at http://bit.ly/zxbd4g.

Check out the pictures below from the event that launched it all.

BAM

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Every Memorial Day weekend The Brooklyn Academy Music (BAM) has an African Arts festival that includes an array of food, clothes, art,  jewelry, hair care items and so much more. One of the main events at BAM is the African dance performance that features a different African dance theme each year. This year a company from Cuba is the main attraction. I saw them perform last week during a preview show and they were spectacular.

After watching their dance routine, for the first time in a long time, I thought about continuing my African dance training. I always enjoyed that style of dance because it can be very magical and the steps tell a story with lots of personality.

This year at BAM I was asked to be a hair model for Going Natural hair care products. The founder of Going Natural told her hair story on Permed to Natural. Check out her feature Here.  I had two strand twists put in using Going Natural’s No More Knots leave-in conditioner and Silky Shea Hair Butter.

Check out the pictures from BAM and my hair modeling experience below.

The hair piece was made by the stylist. She is in Brooklyn, NY and can be reached at info@bohemiansoul.com and www.bosohair.com.

Before the two strand twist I wore a curly afro.

Luv her curls.

Transcendence Natural Hair Show Review

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

I’m writing this post at 6:30am on my way to the Food Co-Op in Park Slope. I like to get there early because the place is small and it’s always crowded. Loads of people like to eat organic food for little money and I am one of them. I don’t mind taking the hike from Bensonhurst to Park Slope because to me it is worth it.

I am sitting on an outside train platform waiting for the D. It’s dark. It looks like it could be 10:00 or 11:00pm instead of almost 7:00am! Fall mornings are spooky. The birds are awake and they are busy chatting. I hear a variety of chirps and tweets. I wonder what they are talking about. They are loud too. Uh oh. Somebody got in trouble.

I am thinking about my shopping list as I board the train but, actually, this post is supposed to be about the Transcendence Natural Hair Show I went to last weekend.

The event was free for the public so that is always a plus. The first thing I noticed was the vendors. There were more vendors selling trinkets, jewelry, clothes, purses, natural face products and soaps then there were items for the hair. I was hoping to see hair care products galore plus tools to style natural hair as well as books and even natural hair pieces. This event appeared to be more of an African Arts Festival instead of a natural hair show.

Once I saw that the food was ready I walked in its direction hoping to find a vegetarian dish. “We have curry potatoes you can eat,” the cook said to me. “Do you want to try some?” As I watched the man gather the potatoes on a fork for me to taste I noticed a small piece of meat in the pan. “Oh there is a piece of meat in the dish,” I said. “No it’s not! No it’s not!” “That’s okay. I’ll pass. Thanks anyway.” I was not in the mood to pay for a lie.

I left. I didn’t even stick around to find out if Soul Summit showed up for the house music dance party and I defiantly didn’t go back the next day for the hair show that cost $30. So I did not have a good experience while at my first natural hair show. I wasn’t even inspired to take a lot of pictures but I did capture a few. Check them out below.

Really nice sista promoting her self published book on natural healthcare. I can’t find the literature she gave me, if I even took any, and I can’t read the website on her shirt. Dang!

I cannot believe I am actually able to go to a natural hair show. I also get to groove to House music with one of the best in the business – Soul Summit – later that evening. I always go to their events at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn during the Summer. They are really good.

I met up with one of the organizers, Onyx, and he told me about the hair show. This is going to be my first natural hair show – no – my first hair show period. I wonder what it will be like. I guess like any other expo. Well, check out the information below. Hope to see you there.
