I cannot express in words how angry I am about this situation here. Another pageant problem surfaces because the winner was born with brown skin. But this time I am really really hurt by all of the nonsense because the beauty queen is a minor, a 7-year-old girl from Wilmington, Delaware.
Jakiya McKoy beat several little girls in the competition and won the title of Little Miss Hispanic Delaware.
“Pageant sponsors Nuestras Raices Delaware (Our Roots) blocked her win after an outcry from people claiming that, because she is Black, she is not the best representative of Latin beauty.”
“Jakiyah has been left devastated after Nuestras Raices Delaware ruled there was no proof she had at least 25% Latina blood.”
“The title is now pending while the committee ‘investigates’ Jakiyah’s heritage. Meanwhile, none of the other competitors were subject to such an investigation.”
“Nuestra Raices Delaware president Maria Parez, however, denied the allegations of racism.”
OOOOO this makes me so mad! When I read the New York Daily News article I had flash backs of racist comments Latin people made to me from when I was a little girl to an adult. At 10-years-old a Puerto Rican man said straight to my face that he didn’t want me to play with his daughters because I was Black! As an adult I dated a Puerto Rican man and he told me a group of little kids performing a Latin dance at an event we attended couldn’t be of Spanish heritage because they were too dark! That relationship didn’t last long.
It’s a shame how uneducated people are, to this day, about their own heritage. I have friends and sorority sisters that possess Honduras, Costa Rican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Venezuelan ancestry and their color ranges from brown, dark brown to dark skin. They are all proud Latinas and will beat you down if you tell them they are not! And guess what? I know several light skinned Latinos who have at least one Black parent, who is also Latin, so why are there complaints about the way Jakiyah looks???
This is what really pisses me off. No one questioned Jakiyah’s ancestry when she entered the competition. In order to enter her folks had to pay a pageant fee and other expenses that come with pageantry. SO it seems to me that Nuestras Raices Delaware didn’t mind taking her parent’s money to compete because they didn’t think she would win!
I know people who have absolutely NO Latin ancestry and are often mistaken for Spanish by Spanish because their skin is light. How ridiculous is that! Therefore, all of the girls should be investigated not just the brown skin girl who won!
Jakiyah’s grandmother was from the Dominican Republic, which makes her 25% Latin, but passed away and there is no documentation of her origin.
