Caring For My Box Braids While on Vacation

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

When my husband and I decided to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon, my first thoughts regarding preparing for the trip was, “How am I going to wear my hair and how am I going to take care of it?”

After thinking about it for a few days I decided box braids would work. For my wedding, I twisted the braids on top of my head into a bun. On my honeymoon, I wore them all down, or all up, or some down and the rest in a bun – whatever I felt like doing at the time — I love box braids!

In Hawaii I didn’t have to worry too much about styling my hair, however, I did have to pay attention to it because I was in beach water, pool water and lake water – daily.

I didn’t do a lot but below is how I cared for my braids during my vacation.

After each swim, I rinsed my hair with warm water while in the shower. If the activity I did that day was sort of dirty, I washed my braids using Shea Moisture’s Organic Yucca and Baobab Thickening Shampoo. I then used Jane Carter Solution’s Revitalizing Leave-In Condition: For De-tangling and Protecting Hair from Heat Styling and the Sun.

I used Jane Carter Solution’s Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner before, and at that time, I wasn’t a big fan. I knew the sun in Sedona, AZ and Kauai, Hawaii was going to be strong and I wanted to protect my stresses so I bought this product based on what it said it was made for.

And guess what, I am happy I did. I sprayed the Revitalizing Leave- In Conditioner on my scalp and braids - where I knew my hair was and wasn’t - everyday. The make of the bottle allowed me to apply the conditioner with ease. I was thankful for that because I was always on the go and didn’t want to fuss with nothing.

To lock in all of that great moisture I simply applied to my scalp and braids a homemade blend of African Shea Butter and regular Castor oil. With the combination of the two products my braids remained shiny and healthy looking.

At night I slept in a satin scarf. And pretty much, that was it!
