The Miss Universe Pageant

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I watched the Miss Universe Pageant on Monday as I do every year and was happy to see that Miss Honduras rocked a big curly Afro during the competion!

From what I know, there are very few pageant girls who wear their natural hair in a style that is noticeably kinky while competing. I thought she looked beautiful. When I was competing and transitioning at the same time everyone (black and white) told me to wear a weave or straighten my hair. Long (curly or straight) pageant hair was key. I wish I had not listened to them. During my next pageant (whenever that is) I am going to sport my own natural curls and just enjoy my experience.

Check out the pictures below of Miss Honduras,

And of course, the winnner,

Honestly, I knew Miss Angola was going to win as soon as she made top 16! No lie.

Years ago I asked an pageant contestant, can a woman with a natural or locs, show, place, or even win in a pageant. She said sadly, no.
I am happy Honduras, stepped up and rocked the afro.

It’s very rare that she’ll win. I heard of someone winning but I never saw it.
